Cebu Prison Dancing Rehabilitation

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Prison overseer Byron Garcia has implemented a dancing rehabilitation program several years ago at the Cebu Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines. I think it’s a great idea, and it’s specially meaningful to me being half Cebuano. This YouTube video of their Thriller routine has received almost 7 million views. It’s creative and entertaining. During a CNN interview, Byron Garcia states, “We don’t have dumbbells here. We don’t have weights. We have dancing.” They’re forced to dance if they’re physically able to, which I’m sure some people would consider torture. Byron Garcia claims that there has not been any violent incidents in about a year and a half because of the success of the program. If dancing calms the prisoners and transforms the usually hostile environment, I’m all for it.

Version 2.0 of jabot.net: WordPress powered

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Finally! I completed setting up a WordPress blog to power my site. Previously, my site consisted of:

  • Static pages using PHP for a rudimentary template system
  • A Gallery 1 photo gallery
  • A ViPER guestbook, which the developers stopped supporting, apparently making it a big spam target and security threat

jabot.net version 1.0
I originally attempted to make a Drupal blog, but it had so many extra capabilities that I wasn’t going to use, and the learning curve was not fun. WordPress is so much easier to set up for a personal blog. It is actually enjoyable to set up a custom WordPress blog. The administration capabilities are intuitive and user friendly, providing just enough of the options I desire. It only took me a few days to customize the basic design.

I expect this blog to evolve and mature as I continue to add posts and customize it to my needs.

WordPress 2.3 is awesome!
